Afternoon of Rock

Tricycle (or however you spell it!) is organising an ‘Afternoon of Rock’ on Friday, June 5th, at 3:15 in the school’s courtyard. There’s going to be several bands, so it’s going to be a rockin’ good time. Please stop by on your way out, or better yet stay and enjoy! For more information, please see Charlie, Jack or Olivier.

Int. Orchestra Cancelled

Intermediate Orchestra will be cancelled for the next two weeks. In the upcoming week, we will be scheduling Advanced Orchestra instead so that they may prepare for their graduation performance. The following week is exam week.

Happy studying!

Interhouse Music Competition

20111024-ticketed-event-3

This year’s Interhouse Music Competition takes place Friday, May 15th at the start of lunch. The piece we’ve chosen is ‘Sway’ – a fusion Latin-jazz piece, made famous by both Dean Martin and recently Michael Buble.

The three houses have been working very hard on their orchestrations. This year looks to be the best year ever, with the quality of the groups so close that it’s bound to be hard to pick a winner.

Please come at the start of lunch to support your house. We look forward to seeing you there!

Music Evening & Tech

The annual Music Evening is this upcoming Tuesday night (April 28th). We have a variety of acts involved, including 4 rock bands, Korean drummers, orchestras, small ensembles, and the DP Music class.

The tech rehearsal is on Monday, April 27th, from 3:15 – 5:15. This is a calendared event because we need to organise 100+ students. Unfortunately, this will impact upon other scheduled activities, and we apologise for that. We’ve asked the sporty student to wear their uniforms to the rehearsal so that they can leave right away for their practices. Also, it’s a top’n’tails rehearsal, which means students are free to leave as soon as their portion is finished, e.g. since orchestra is going first, that will release 40 students within the first 30 minutes.

If you have any questions or comments, please refer them to Bonnie… or Amy (grin).

Thanks for all your support!

Music Evening

The annual Music Evening is this upcoming Tuesday night (April 28th). We have a variety of acts involved, including 4 rock bands, Korean drummers, orchestras, small ensembles, and the DP Music class. We are currently seeking 1 or 2 students who are happy to MC the evening. These students would need to attend the tech rehearsal on Monday, from 3:15 – 5:15. If you are interested, please contact Miss Keus or Ms. Bonnie.

Interhouse Music Competition

The year is quickly coming to a close, which means it’s time to start thinking about this year’s interhouse music competition! Each year it gets better and better, with even more creative and interesting artistic interpretations. The first year was rock, with “Livin’ on a Prayer.”  The second year was counter, with “Ring of Fire.” This year… drum roll please… we are going with Latin jazz! And the song? “Sway.”

Sway is a Spanish song first recorded as “Quien Sera.” Since then it’s been covered by a variety of different artists, including Dean Martin, Jennifer Lopez, Michael Buble and the Pussy Cat Dolls.

Steps:

1. See your house captain to express interest in performing. You don’t need to find a group because your house captain will put you in touch with other musicians.

2. Go to studentlargestorage / music / interhouse / MYPDP and download the video files, leadsheet and sheet music.

3. Get together with your group and start practicing.

4. The competition will take place the week of May 12th, with more details to follow.

Miss Bonnie and Miss Keus will help every group equally because they are not the judges for the event. If you have any questions or comments, please come see Miss Keus or your house captain.

Good luck everyone! Make us all sway!

Intermediate Orchestra

Miss Keus is away on professional development, but intermediate orchestra will continue with substitute conductors. Please come with Mamma Mia and your instruments ready.

Ukulele Workshop

Fellow Ukulelists,

Thank you for attending one of the ukulele sessions this week. I hope that you found it informative and fun, and that you aren’t too scared of Gs and G7s! Many thanks to Bonnie, who taught me to play the ukulele in the first place, and who was a great help today (even if she did start a round!).

All resources are found on: TeacherLargeStorage / Ukulele INSET Workshop. There you will find:

– INSET iBook (view in iBooks Author or on your iPad)

– INSET iBook that has been PDFed (videos won’t play)

– video of how to tune your ukulele using GarageBand

– Axis of Awesome 4 Chord youtube video

– miscellaneous resources – YouTube tutorials, TABs, chord sheets, lyrics, etc.

Throughout the year, I will continue throwing in more resources.

I have had a large number of people inquiry about buying ukuleles. Possible to buy off Taobao, but with very poor quality. Also possible to buy off music-street in Shanghai, if you are in the area. Lydia Yang’s music store (near Little Suguo) has a good variety of quality and sizes, and so I’ve emailed her to start a conversation about how / when we can get some ukuleles for any teachers interested.

I’ll keep you informed.

Until then, please check out Jake Shimabukuro – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DrQlz0G66ng

Night of Rock

Congratulations to all performers of Thursday’s Night of Rock and many thanks to all those staff and students who came along to support the bands. It was a fitting end of the Carnivale-era, though we are looking forward to great things from Trycicle.
