JAKARTA UPDATE

Last week, you might recall, we sent cards of support to the cleaners at JIS who are in prison convicted of a crime which did not happen. Since then, teachers Neil Bantleman and Ferdi Tjeong, who were acquitted of the same crime some months ago, had their acquittal overruled. Neil and Ferdi are now back in prison. CANADIANS, if you would like to take action, attached is a link to a letter which Neil’s brother Guy suggests that you might use (whole or in part or as basis for your own letter) to your Member of Parliament. Please ask me for any other details… Thanks! Lindy Buckley

Grade 5 Exhibition 2016

Think systemically……5th grade need mentors to be part of the Exhibition system.

Please email any of the grade 5 teachers if you are willing to be a part of this exciting journey!

THINK ABOUT BEING A MENTOR FOR A SMALL GROUP!

  • The role of the mentor is chiefly to advise and keep students on track
  • There should be regular meetings. For the most part we would like mentor meetings to happen during UOI time, in the grade 5 classrooms.
  • Offer advice on locating resources and using them efficiently
  • Ask questions (i.e. to clarify thinking, to help with processing information, to extend knowledge etc.)
  • Help interpret sophisticated/difficult information
  • Facilitate interviews, telephone calls, any electronic communication
  • Goal setting and time management advice
  • Be supportive and encouraging
  • Celebrate achievements and successes with the students

Grade 5 students will be most appreciative of your help!

PYP EXHIBITION 2016

DURING INSET week, there are 2 times when Grade 5 teachers will be do some exhibition planning.

Tuesday 2:45 to 4:00

Friday 1:30 to 2:45

Grade 5 teachers invite any specialists or other interested staff, perhaps potential mentors, to come along if they are free and interested! Room C140. If you are interested but not able to come – please contact a grade 5 teacher to arrange another suitable time to meet.

From Jakarta…

Almost every day, someone at NIS asks me about Neil and Ferdi and I know that some of you support them on facebook and twitter. Yesterday afternoon my previous boss went to visit Neil and Ferdi in prison, before he left Indonesia for good. I asked him to give our best wishes. Neil asked Paul to pass on to us at NIS their thanks. He said it meant so much to them to know that people around the world cared about their dreadful predicament. There is now a website you might visit if you are interested in how things are going. Many thanks!

#PYPCHAT

Tonight, at 7pm, #pypchat on twitter. Tonight’s topic is Concept Driven Learning. See wiki for possible questions and resources. http://pypchat.wikispaces.com/

  1. What is concept based learning?
  2. What are the advantages of concept based teaching/ learning?
  3. What are the challenges in concept based teaching /learning?
  4. What are the big ideas (concepts!) in concept based learning?
  5. How do you introduce concepts to students?
  6. What strategies do you use for supporting students in thinking beyond the facts to big conceptual ideas?
  7. How do you assess understanding of concepts?
  8. If you could add one key concept to those offered by the IB, what might it be?
  9. How do you explore concepts across disciplines? How do you plan for transdisciplinary approach?

Support for JIS community

Dear NIS Colleagues, on behalf of friends and ex-colleagues at JIS, thank you, thank you so much for the support you showed yesterday afternoon for Neil and Ferdi as well as the cleaners already serving sentences. Our photo with so many people is greatly appreciated. This interview with the wives is worth a read if you have time.

Cards for Jakarta – reminder

A couple of cards of good wishes for Neil & Ferdi (Jakarta Intercultural School teachers) will be in the staffroom until Tuesday 10th for anyone to sign (or email me – Lindy – and I will add your name/message.) Here is their background story…. Many thanks!
