New Maker Space

The old PYP Design room has been transformed into a Maker Space! Please swing by and check it out. This is a space for you to use as you want. Of course, please tidy up before you go. If you have supplies that you would like to house in this room, add them to the shelves now. Sharing our resources is a great way for our school to be more environmentally responsible.

This space is available for use anytime Monday-Thursday.Reserve the room on the sign-up sheet by the door. On Fridays it is reserved for the Grade 4 students who will be working on their Creative New Undertakings, a NIS strategy team prototype. You are all most welcome to come by and see this project in action anytime.

We hope this room will be buzzing with creative energy each and every day.

Grade 4 Genius Hour Sharing

Please join us on Tuesday from 1:30-2:30 in the Grade 4 classrooms so the students can share their learning process for “Genius Hour.” This year the students have devoted loads of time and energy to a diverse array of projects that they are truly passionate about. They’ve grown as mathematicians, scientists, makers, musicians, critical thinkers, doers, artists, communicators, etc, etc as the’ve had this opportunity to independently inquire. We hope you can make it.

Times Farm Vegetable Sale

From 3:00-3:30 James Gu from Time Farm will be in the center selling organic vegetables on Thursday.

Times farm is a permaculture farm right here in Nanjing. James is excited to meet people in the NIS community and would like to collaborate with teachers & students on a variety of projects. Head to the center today to buy some vegetables and meet James.

Muscle Needed Friday

We need your help in the garden. All the compost that was delivered earlier this year needs to be moved into the Greenhouse.

On Friday from 3:15-3:45 please come out and get your daily exercise with us. MYP/DP Students, staff, entire sports teams, & parents are most welcome.

Your help will be much appreciated.

Music & Film Festival for Grades 1-4 Friday

The students from 4A are hosting a dance party and film festival for Grades 1-4  on Friday from 3:15-4:15 in the PAC. There will be animated films, original dance music, adventure films, and stop-motion movies to enjoy. Students need a permission slip to attend and a parent to pick them up at 4:15. If they have a signed permission slip, please direct them to the PAC at the end of the day Friday where Mr. Johnson & a crew of 4th Graders will be waiting for the the party to begin. Questions? Send Paul Johnson an email anytime.

Garden Help-Monday 4:00

At 4:00 on Monday we are receiving 125 bags of compost that need to be unloaded off of a delivery truck.  Each bag weighs 40 KG, so that’s a grand total of 5,000KG of compost. This is clearly too much for me to do alone if I want to be home before dark. If just a few people (or an entire sports team) came out to help, we could be finished in no time. Your time & muscle would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Genius Day in 4A

Last week I posted a request for mentors to help with Genius Day in 4A. We are still in need of more support. If you missed my message or need a reminder of the types of projects you might see, you can click on my name above to see the post.

Genius day will be from 8:10-9:20 & 10:00-10:40 today.

Thanks for your support.

Creative New Undertakings in 4A

Every Friday in 4A my students are prototyping a day of independent inquiry. We call it “Genius Day.” We are in need of more adults &/or upper level students to come in to make connections, offer guidance, and to mentor the students as they explore their passions. If you are free for 10-15 minutes (or more) on Friday, please stop by C125 and see if a student is engaged with something that you feel a connection with. Below are the types of projects that you might see:

  • Instrument Making
  • Website/Travel Blog Creation
  • Stop Motion Animation
  • Cooking
  • Storyboarding
  • Digital Music Composition (Garageband)
  • Event Planning
  • Origami Art Installation
  • Balsa Wood Airplanes
  • Dance Instruction
  • Documentary Filmmaking
  • Furniture Design
  • Cardboard Costume Creation
  • Book Binding
  • Classical Guitar/House Music Mashup
  • Computer Programming (Scratch)

Your time, expertise, and ideas will be much appreciated as we explore this new endeavour.
