how to get rid of emails from the past

Apple’s Mail app has a feature called Smart Addresses that’s designed to make it easier for you to see who you’re sending email messages to. Instead of displaying names and addresses in Mail’s To: field, Smart Addresses just display the name of the email recipient. One of the benefits of using Smart Addresses is the option to delete previous recipients from Mail’s collection of remembered addresses.

Smart Addresses is enabled by default, but you can make sure this feature is on by:

  1. Opening the Mail App.
  2. Selecting the Mail menu and choosing Preferences.
  3. Clicking the Viewing tab.
  4. Checking the box that says Use Smart Addresses.

When you select Smart Addresses, it changes the way Mail displays addressing information from a full named and address:

To just an addressee’s name:

Once you enter the ancient email address you should note that there’s a small arrow next to the recipient’s name. Click that menu and included in the list of menu options you’ll see an item that says, “Remove from Previous Recipients List.” Select this item and this ancient address will no longer appear when you address a new email message.

The to-don’t list

This is tedious way to have to remove old email addresses and there’s a way to bypass the tedium.

  1. With Mail open, select the Window menu and choose Previous Recipients.

This opens a window displaying a list of everyone you’ve sent email messages to. Take note of the first column. Anyone with a contact card next to their name is someone who is already in your Contact list, nothing in that field means they’re not. The easiest way to figure out which addresses to get rid of is to sort the list by Last Used date and delete from the top down:

  1. Click the Last Used column header until the oldest date appears at the top.
  2. Click the first address appearing in the list.
  3. Scroll to the last date you want to delete address for and shift-click that contact.
  4. Click the Remove From List button.

You should note that this will not delete any contacts from the Contacts app, it only keeps mail from remembering past recipients.

AirDrop – Can’t find other Macs?

We’re seeing adware on people computers. We are now monitoring the school network for this type of activity and following up with those who are infected. If you see Adware behaviour on your computer please have it fixed. Stop by our Apple store or  email

Where does it come from?

Adware often comes packaged in installers for other software. Most often, this is because something was downloaded illegally from a torrent or piracy site. Sometimes it is because it has been added to a legit piece of software by an unscrupulous download site. (Even well-known download sites, such as and Softonic, have resorted to this kind of unethical behavior, and should never be used.) Other times it is because a developer has opted to use an adware-riddled installer, provided with incentives from the adware creator, to distribute their software. It could even be installed through deceit, by pretending to be something that it is not in order to trick the user into installing it. (This last type is usually the only type that is detected as malware by anti-virus software.)

What are the symptoms?

The most typical symptom of such adware is the display of advertisements on your Mac where none should exist. Adware also will often change your browser’s home page and search engine settings, and may even cause redirects from legit sites to sites constructed for the financial benefit of the adware developer. It can also cause secondary problems, such as web pages displaying incorrectly (due to insertion of foreign HTML code) or browser crashes.

Fix it by Scanning with AdwareMedic

Download and run AdwareMedic

AdwareMedic will scan your system and help you remove any known adware automatically. Please read the AdwareMedic documentation, which can also be found by clicking the Get Help button in the app. Be sure to pay attention to any prompts, as you may need to decide whether or not to delete certain preference files, or may need to restart the computer and then do another scan. Read the prompts carefully, and be sure you understand and follow all instructions.

If you are unable to download AdwareMedic because the Download button redirects you to other sites (such as the MacKeeper site) or because the AdwareMedic site pops open for a fraction of a second before being replaced with a page that says your browser can’t find the server, you are infected with the Downlite adware. It is actively trying to prevent you from downloading AdwareMedic. See us in the Apple store or email

using bittorent is the best way to kill the school network

Using Bittorent on the school network isn’t allowed because it has the capacity to bring the school network to a stand still. First time offenders are given a warning. The second time you’ll be referred to your division level Principal and your computer might be placed into a restricted lock down mode.

The image above we see the impact a single Bittorent user visiting 45,000 websites in a few minutes. For comparison a normal computer will visit about 2,000 websites in a day. Bittorent applications Vuse, uTorrent and Tranmission should not be on your computer.
