Criterion C: Creating the Solution

Create a section in your book for Criterion C. Each of the following tasks will be the ‘chapters’ of this section of the book. Use the features of Book Creator: you can embed video, Padlets, insert video and audio that you make of your own reflections, add photographs. Make it very clear that you are responding to each section using the headings listed below.

Criterion C Workbook

C1: Plan

What?

Outline a plan, which considers the use of resources and time, sufficient for peers to be able to follow to create the solution.

Why?

It pays off to take a bit of time to think about the order in which you are going to put your product together, what steps might be difficult and how much time they will roughly take. You can use this thinking to avoid the risk of ending up with an unfinished product.

How?

  • Describe all steps needed to create your product in detail
  • List all tools you will need for each step.
  • List all materials you will need for each step (where appropriate).
  • Estimate the time it takes to complete each step
  • Outline safety precautions for each step (where appropriate).
  • Outline/describe what each step entails (bullet point sequence of smaller ‘sub-steps’).

Consider also:

While every student has their own project, if you are making something from a fabric or textile, it is likely your plan would have some of the following ‘steps’:

  • Rip seams
  • Iron fabric
  • Mark out patterns A and B on fabric
  • Cut pattern parts A and B
  • Pin seam allowance on part A
  • Press seams on part A with iron
  • PinpartAtopartB
  • SewpartAtopartB
  • Apply rivets/eyelets/snap buttons
  • Sew on snap buttons/velcro/zipper
  • Decorating with …

C2: Technical Skills

What?

Demonstrate excellent technical skills when making the solution.

Why?

Because you want to be the best you can be!

How?

Present a series of photographs and/or screenshots that illustrate the production process of your product. You can also add video of yourself working. Document this in your Design book.

C3: Present the Solution

What?

  1. Follow the plan to create the solution, which functions as intended.
  2. Present the solution as a whole.

Why?

You want to demonstrate the qualities of your product in your Design book.

How?

Present an annotated collage or infographic containing high-quality photographs demonstrating:

  • Your customer or similar wearing/using your product.
  • Different angles of your product.
  • The patterns/unassembled pieces (real material or paper) of your product.
  • Close-ups of joining methods of your product (sewing etc).

Use a maximum of four pages in your design book to present these.

C4: Changes to the Design

What?

List the changes made to the chosen design and plan when making the solution.

Why?

Just a short reflection to highlight the improvements you made to your product when going from the drawing table to reality. A lot of learning did actually happen!

How?

List all significant improvements and changes you made to your designs (task B3 & B4) when creating your product. Illustrate your list with photographs and/or screenshots where helpful.
