Required Apps and Set Up for Parents

For all G1 NIS students, parents will deliver their child’s iPad to their teacher on Friday, August 16th. The IT department will then download all required free NIS apps and set up a folder structure to keep them organized. iPads will then be returned to parents so that parents can set up an Apple ID and their child’s iPad settings and download the required paid apps. For a more detailed timeline, please refer to the New G1 Letter to Families.

For all G2-4 NIS students, parents should set up an Apple ID and their child’s iPad settings and download the required paid apps. The NIS technology team will download all required free apps for your child at school. There are two options for how to do this.

OPTION 1: Bring your child’s iPad to the Macquarium and ask the IT team to wipe the iPad and download all free NIS apps. Once the iPad has all required free apps, it will be returned to you to set up your Apple ID, download paid apps and program the settings. NIS free apps will be organized in the new NIS folder structure.

  • Recommended for: any student with a new iPad, any student using the old iPad of another person, or any student who has too many games or photos on their iPad and would like a fresh start to the school year.
  • This option does require you to back up anything you want to keep from your iPad (such as photos)
  • You will not need to repurchase paid apps if you do this. Simply log into your Apple ID and follow these instructions to redownload paid apps.

OPTION 2: Set up an Apple ID, download paid apps and program the settings. NIS free apps will be downloaded onto your child’s iPad by the IT department at school. They will not be organized in the new NIS folder structure (your child will need to reorganize them with teacher support).

Step 1: Set up an Apple ID or Family Sharing for your child

If you do not use Apple products yourself, you will need to create an Apple ID before you can download any apps. Follow directions here in English, Mandarin or Korean.

If you use Apple products yourself, we recommend that you set up Family Sharing for your children. Follow the link to find directions from Apple Support to set up family sharing for your child. This will allow you to monitor your child’s activity, approve any apps they wish to download and your child will have their own iCloud account to back up pictures and school work. Click here for directions in Mandarin and Korean.

Step 2: Set up your child’s iPad settings

Please either use the PDF or watch the video to see how to set up your child’s settings.

Step 3: Download your child’s required paid apps

Below are the paid apps required for each grade level. Please note that many apps are used in multiple grade levels. You will only need to purchase those apps once and you can use them for multiple years. With family sharing, you also only need to pay for the apps once for all of your children.
