First Day: New-to-NIS Students only
7:30 – 8:00 Students and parents in the PAC and take to homeroom
8:15 – 10:15 Students in classrooms

  • Meet same grade level students and teachers
  • Ice breakers
  • Tours
  • Playground
  • And more!

10:15 – 10:30 Students picked up by parents from homeroom

Keep last years rules/class agreements up until your new class creates their own agreements in week 3 or 4.

Day 1: First day for all students

(No pull out Specials – Period 1, 2, and 3)
No swimming today

  • 7:45 – Teachers greet and interact with students
    Students make locker name tags (multiple languages – value home language)
  • New get a language buddy
  • Stop signals taught (e.g. Chimes, claps, hand in the air) – Stop, get quiet, and look
  • Morning meetings – 4 Components (greeting, sharing, activity, morning message)
  • Review Interactive modelling – Lining up, hallway walking, bathroom procedures
  • Between 9:00-9:45 – Healthy snack in class
  • Energisers
  • (Optional – Teach playground games before break)
  • Tour the playground  – talk about playground essential agreements and interactively model
  • BREAK – Interactive model exit and entry (Ensure buddies stay together)
  • Math, Reading, Writing see Language Arts and Maths tabs for ideas (TFSWS Pg 32 -34)
  • Go early to the cafeteria – especially grade 1 (Pg30)
  • Lunch/Break
  • Quiet time (Pg 30)
  • Take class picture and send home a first-day digital newsletter (include specialist teacher times)
  • Teach dismissal procedure
  • Closing circle

Day 2
