(Gr.1 sit together in groups on the stage. Narrator 1 stands to speak)

Narrator 1: This magical underwater adventure began one sunny afternoon.  Xianming and her brother Xiaohong were looking at all the fish in their new tropical aquarium. They had been given it by their parents as a special present for doing so well in their swimming tests.

(Xianming and Xiaohong are standing either side of the tank, looking and pointing at different things.)

Xianming: Look Xiaohong, there’s a clownfish and a rainbow fish swimming around those shells at the bottom

of the tank.

Xiaohong: They look excited. Do you think they have found something?

Narrator 2: As the children looked closer, they suddenly spotted tiny orange starfish lying at the bottom of the

tank. It was looking very, very sad.

Xianming: I wonder where that little starfish has come from. I’m sure that it wasn’t there yesterday.

Xiaohong: No. I haven’t seen it there before!

Narrator 3: Then the starfish began to swim to the top of the tank – and in a magical moment…

(Stella stands and moves forward, in between Xianming and Xiaohong, as if emerging from the aquarium.)

…it was standing there between Xianming and Xiaohong.

Stella the Starfish: I’m Stella the Starfish. Oh, Xianming and Xiaohong – I think I need your help!

(Grade 1 stand up, but stay in position)

Stella’s Song

(Track 2 & 13)

Vocal track

No vocals

Verse 1 – Grade 1:

Point both hands to Stella, then mime opening a book.

Stella the starfish, tell us your story

Both arms out to the side, then arms up and around.

How did you come here, where are you from?

Point both hands to Stella, then both arms out to the side.

You look so lonely, where is your family?

Hug body with both arms, then both arms out to the side.

You look so sad. Where do you belong?

All grade 1 sit down as Stella sings.

Stella:

I was up in the bay

Where I often would play.

But a crashing wave hit me

And washed me away.

Verse 2 – Stella:

Then as I tumbled and I couldn’t see and

Bubbles were rushing over my head.

When the wave passed I found myself holding

On to a conch shell on the sea bed.

All grade 1 stand.

Grade 1:

Mime holding the shell

So the magical shell

Continue to mime holding the shell

Has come here as well.

Hug body with both arms,

Though your story is sad,

Point both hands at chest, then both arms forwards and around.

We are sure we can help

Point both hands to Stella,

All: Stella the starfish… (then 1A exits SR)

Stella: Please will you help me?

Point both hands to Stella again,

All: Stella the starfish (then 1C exits SL)

Stella: Where is my family?

Point both hands to Stella again,

All: Stella the starfish… (then 1B exits SR)

Stella: Please will you help me?

MUSIC – Seaweed Dance 1 (tracks 3 & 14)

SONG – The Clownfish (tracks 4 & 15)

With vocals

Without vocals

(The clownfish, k1, all swim offstage to the ‘under the sea’ backing track and Gr.1 enter and stay standing).

Stella, Xianming and Xiaohong stand up to talk to the tropical fish.)

Myrto: Oh dear, you all look so glum. Didn’t you enjoy the clownfish song?

 All Gr.1: We liked it!

Xianming: The only thing that will cheer us up is if you can help us to find Stella’s family.

Cecilia: (puzzled) Let me think. Hmm – I don’t remember seeing any starfish on our travels today. Just a few

jellyfish and a miserable turtle.

All Gr.1: We haven’t seen them.

James: And anyway we’ve all been too busy having fun. Sorry we can’t help you.

All Gr.1: Sorry.

Narrator 6: Stella, Xianming and Xiaohong looked at each other, then continued through the water. Suddenly,

they were confronted by a snarling, snapping green turtle.

(Terry the turtle emerges from behind a rock and towers over them, looking very cross. Stella, Xianming and Xiaohong move back to the safety of their rock. Terry faces forward to sing.)

SONG – ‘Terry the Turtle’ (Tracks 5 & 16)

With vocals

Without vocals

Verse 1

        Make snapping action with hands

All: Snap, snap, snap. He’s Terry the Turtle.

Cross arms, then make an ‘x’ and fling arms out and down.

Grump, grump, grump. Keep out of his way.

Terry: My flippers are tough and I’m feeling rough,

So just… leave me alone today.

Verse 2

        Make snapping action with hands

All: Snap, snap, snap. He’s Terry the Turtle.

Cross arms, then make an ‘x’ and fling arms out and down.

Grump, grump, grump. Keep out of his way.

Terry: My blood is all cold and I’m feeling old,

So just… will you please go away!

Right arms out to the side, then left arm out, then fling both arms out to the left.

All: Long, long ago he left his turtle group.

Cross arms back and forth, then put both arms out to the audience.

Didn’t want to end up like his friends…

Terry speaks:… turtle soup!

Point both hands to Terry the Turtle

All: Since then he’s lived alone

Put both arms out to the audience and around to the side.

In this part of the sea.

Terry: These rocks I call my home so please…

(spoken) …don’t bother me!

Repeat verses 1 & 2 above. Then…

        Make snapping action with hands

All: Snap, snap, snap.

         Cross arms

Grump, grump, grump  (then freeze with arms folded).

Terry: Read my beak…

(spoken) not..at…home…to…day!

(All of grade 1 tropical fish then sit down).

Narrator 7: The trio were frightened of the turtle, but Xiaohong found the courage to confront the creature.

(Xiaohong steps forward towards Terry the Turtle.)

Xiaohong: Stop being so miserable and nasty. We’ve done nothing wrong. In fact we have come here to help

this little starfish find her family. Tell him Stella!

(Stella steps forward timidly to sing)

SONG – ‘Stella’s Song: Reprise’ (Tracks 6 & 17)

With vocals

Without vocals

Stella: I was up in the bay

Where I often would play (All of grade 1 tropical fish stand)

But a crashing wave hit me

And washed me away.

      (Point both hands towards Stella)

All: Stella the starfish… (1A exit SR)

Stella: Please will you help me?

(Point both hands towards Stella again)

All: Stella the starfish…(1C exit SL)

Stella: Where is my family?

(Point both hands towards Stella again)

All: Stella the starfish…(1B exit SR)

Stella: Please will you help me?

Terry the Turtle: (with emotion) Oh, what a sad kettle of fish! I’m sorry for being so grumpy – it’s my age, you

know.

Xianming: Then maybe you should meet my Granny! She is ancient, but she’s the most cheerful person I

know!

Terry the Turtle: Enough, enough – I’m too old for this! Now if you’ll excuse me, I need a bit of quiet shell-

time.

Narrator 1: Stella, Xianonming and Xiaohong looked sad, but continued through the coral reef. But before long they swam headlong into a shoal of multi-colored rainbow fish, that were gracefully swimming round and round.

(K2 enter and get into position to sing. Stella. Xianonming and Xiaohong sit, as before, on the rock.)

K2 SONG – ‘Look at our Colors’ (Tracks 7 and 18)

Stella. Xianonming and Xiaohong stand up to speak to the Rainbow fish.)

Harris: Were you looking at our beautiful colors?

Xiaohong: Well yes, but we were also wondering if anyone has seen Stella’s family. She’s lost them.

Sally: What do they look like? Are they sparkling shades of orange and gold?

Stella: (close to tears) Well…no. They’re sort of dull and sandy. Oh, but I miss them so much! (Xianonming

             gives Stella a hug.)

Rachel: Please don’t cry little starfish. We know a very wise shark called Sid. He lives in a dark cave at the bottom of the ocean.                      He might be able to help you.

(The rainbow fish, k2, all swim offstage and Gr.1 enter to the ‘under the sea’ backing track. Stella, Xianonming and Xiaohong continued through the coral reef. James, Cecilia and Myrto stay backstage and get their starfish costume on. )

Narrator 2: The trio travelled deep into the ocean and soon arrived at the mouth of a very dark and gloomy cave. Stella, Xianonming and Xiaohong were scared to go into the cave, but soon plucked up the courage to call out.

Stella, Xianonming and Xiaohong: Sid – are you there? Sid – Can you help us?

Narrator 3: Slowly – ever so slowly – a dark, mysterious shape appeared at the entrance of the cave and began

to sing.

SONG – Sid the Shark (Tracks 8 & 19)

With vocals

Without vocals

Verse 1

Sid: Down at the bottom of the deep blue sea,

Someone is calling, calling for me.

If they have travelled to my cave beneath

It must be important. I’d better take my teeth.

Chorus

Point both hands at Sid the Shark, then put both thumbs up in-front.

All: Being a shark has many advantages.

Right hand out to the side, then left hand, then cross arms and fling them down to sides.

Fishies and folks tend to keep away.

Both arms out to the side, then right hand out to the right, middle, then left.

But with the job comes responsibility.

Point both hands at Sid the Shark, then fling both arms up into the air

Sid the Shark will save the day!

(All of grade 1 tropical fish sit down. )

Verse 2

Sid: Down at the bottom of the deep blue sea,

I can hear, I can taste, I can smell, I can see.

I know what you’re thinking and where you’re from.

Electrical signals tell me what’s going on.

Chorus again – All Gr.1 stand and sing

(Spoken above the music…)

Sid: What can I do to help you all?

Stella: Please Sid – help me t0 find my family.

I miss them so much!

Sid: To find your family you must solve this riddle,

Listen carefully to the clues.

(Sid – singing solo) Swim through the coral reef…

(All echo – whispered) …swim through the coral reef…

Sid: Pass the rainbow fish.

All: …pass the rainbow fish…

Sid: Do not stop at the snapping turtle,

Ignore the clown fish.

All: …Ignore the clown fish…

Sid: Find the shipwreck

At the bottom of the sea.

All: …at the bottom of the sea…

…at the bottom of the sea…

…at the bottom of the sea…

(Grade 1 sit down)

Narrator 4: After finishing his mysterious riddle, Sid the Shark has disappeared back into his dark cave. Stella,

Xianonming and Xiaohong looked at each other and then started on their final journey to find

Stella’s lost family.

(During the following song, Stella, Xianonming and Xiaohong cautiously swim around the stage area. They pass, in turn, the rainbow fish group, Terry the Turtle, the clownfish group, and the tropical fish. To simplify the movement, and help achieve a sense o5 ‘ journey’, each of those characters could temporarily stand from where they are seated as the trio pass by and wave their arms-  like seaweed – before sitting again.)

SONG – ‘Journey to the Shipwreck’ (tracks 9 & 20)

All: They swam through the coral reef…

They passed the rainbow fish…

They did not stop snapping at the turtle…

They ignored the clownfish…

Then Xianonming spotted a shipwreck…

…a shipwreck there at the bottom of the sea.

(All Gr.1 echo – whispered)

…at the bottom of the sea…

…at the bottom of the sea…

…at the bottom of the sea…

(Stella, Xianonming and Xiaohong arrive at the shipwreck – which is either a painted mural/collage on the back wall or an object which has been positioned or uncovered during the last song.)

Narrator 5: The trio were amazed to find themselves at the shipwreck that Sid had sung about. They

immediately started exploring around and about.it. After a while Stella suddenly shouted out…

Stella: (with great excitement) I’ve found them! I’ve found them! I’ve found my family!

Myrto: We’ve been looking for you everywhere!

Cecilia: We thought we’d lost you forever!

James: We’re so glad we’ve found you!

Narrator 6: All the other creatures had felt the ripples of excitement through the water and, in no time at all, had gathered at the shipwreck to celebrate with Stella and her family. Then the seaweed lead a special dance.

(The seaweed and all the fish move swiftly onto the stage, ready to dance.)

MUSIC – Seaweed Dance 2 (tracks 10 & 21)

(As the dance music fades, the seaweed and all the sea creatures gracefully sit on the stage, leaving Stella, Xianonming and Xiaohong alone in the centre.)

Narrator 7: After the celebrations had finished, Stella thanked Xianonming and Xiaohong for all their help and

told them to hold tightly on to the magic conch shell.

Music: Students play suitable sound effects on their instruments, as before.

(Narrator 7 continues…)

Before they knew it, Xianonming and Xiaohong found themselves back home in front of their

aquarium.

(The fish tank is repositioned on stage, just in front of Stella, who now disappears out of sight, leaving the conch shell with Xianonming and Xiaohong.)

Xiaohong: Wow – what an adventure we’ve had!

Xianonming: But where is Stella?

Xiaohong: Let’s look in the aquarium. She might be in there.

(Both look into the fish tank.)

Xianonming: There’s no sign of her – she’s disappeared!

Xiaohong: But look – we’ve still got the magic conch shell. What shall we do with it?

Xianonming: We must look after it forever and ever, just in case Stella needs our help again one day.

(All the characters, including Stella, stand up as the ‘audience music’ is playing.)
