The counting game

This one is great for getting brains focused, expanding range and working on part work.

Many Mumbling Mice

Many mumbling mice are making midnight music in the moonlight

Mighty mice!

it’s a great way to work on phrasing and other expressive elements, as well as diction (for obvious reasons).
Repeat the pattern going up (or down) a half step each time. Once you get the hang of the words, speed up gradually each time. Once we’re upto a reasonable speed, work on singing the whole thing legato, particularly connecting “mice” and “are” in the first measure. T

This is a great one to have them experiment with different moods, dynamics, and vocal timbres because of the smaller range.

3. Yes / No Game

This is a great way to get brains going while practicing or introducing particular melodic or rhythmic phrases. The conductor sings (or chants, if you want to just focus on rhythm) a short phrase, and the choir echoes it back. BUT the choir has to use the opposite of the words the conductor uses, so if the conductor sings “yes, yes, no, no, yes”, then the choir sings back “no, no, yes, yes, no”. Start this by sticking with just one word or the other, but it can get pretty crazy once you start mixing them up. Can link to a part of a song that’s tricky.  Echo it with yes/no again then practice the phrase in the music. Spot the connection!
4.

  1. Breath in through our nose, hold for 4 counts, and then let out through our mouths saying SSS (like a snake). Do this both as loudly and as quietly as possible. Imagine you are a huge anaconda and then the smallest rattlesnake.
  2. Humming from doh upto soh, and then back again
  3. Same saying ‘Super, duper, double bubble gum

A song in a round

My Bonny

My Bonny lies over the ocean

My Bonny lies over the sea

My Bonny lies over the ocean

So bring back my Bonny to me.

Bring back,

Bring back,

Oh, bring back my Bonny to me, to me.

Bring back,

Bring back,

Oh, bring back my Bonny to me.

Row Your Boat

Row, row, row, your boat

Gently down the stream

Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily

Life is but a dream!

Any time

Any time I get the opportunity to warm up my voice

I’m gonna warm it up, warm it up

Any time I get the opportunity to warm up my voice

You’re gonna hear me say

hey, hey, hey, hey

Any time I get the opportunity to warm up my voice (key change)
