NIS Girls Invent

Anneliese Gegenheimer is a former IBM computer scientist who has a passion for engaging girls in STEM based activities. She has set up a non-profit for this in her hometown of Chicago. Anneliese is currently studying at Johns Hopkins in Nanjing and will be leading a session 3 ASA for our girls in Grades 4 and 5.

Here are the details of the ASA:

ASA Title: NIS Girls Invent
ASA Description:
Do you like solving problems?  This after school activity is for the community of 4th and 5th grade girls who like finding creative solutions to problems in their community and are interested in learning more about the invention process.  Students will work individually or in small teams to create a prototype and pitch their ideas!
Venue: PYP Design Pit
Max # of Students: 25
Grade/s: 4th and 5th grade girls
Day of Week: Friday

We are looking for mentors. We want six women who can come and support the ASA for one session each (of course, you can come more often).  Anneliese is leading the ASA and I am supporting her, but we would love to have more hands on deck and are asking for you to volunteer 60 minutes of your time. No prep needed, just show up with enthusiasm.

If you are interested, please let me know: sonyaterborg@nanjing-school.com

MS/US Report Card Proofing Today!

Hello MS/US Editors,

Today (like right now!) have the chance to proofread your report cards in a slightly extended Advisory session until 8:25am.

Things to look for:

Are all of your classes are accounted for?

Are there any errors in the comments (your passport name should be used)?

Any missing comments or ATLs?

Does the sum of your criteria scores match these grade boundaries for each class?

If there are any errors or omissions, please email the teacher and copy (cc) Mr. Bratton for Grades 6-9 or Dr. Saavedra for Grades 10-12 before the end of Advisory today.

Also, at this point you might feel like begging a teacher for “one more point” to bump up a grade… Don’t do it! This is called “Grade Grubbing” and it’s not cool! If you have a question about your learning, ask it. But, if the Grade-Grubbing detector goes off, teachers have strict instruction to send you to us for intensive guided reflection.

Thanks and get to it!

Mr. Bratton and Dr. Saavedra
