Last week for MacBook Loaners

With the end of the school year approaching the MacBook loaning program has come to it’s end. All students and teachers who have a loaner checked out in their name will receive an email asking them to return the loaner to Ms. Cassie at the Apple store. The Apple repair shop will still perform repairs but the option of checking out a loaner will not be an option.

If there are questions about this please email help@nanjing-school.com

Thanks,

Brian Lockwood

WildAid cards

Sets of photo cards will be on sale in The Centre foyer next week in aid of WildAid. 30RMB for 6 or 10RMB each. Leave the money in the honesty box. Money will go towards protecting elephants, rhinos and other wild animals. WildAid’s mission is to end the illegal wildlife trade in our lifetimes. “We envision a world where people no longer buy wildlife products such as shark fin, elephant ivory and rhino horn.”

Thanks for your support. See http://wildaid.org/ for more information.

Summer Classics! Book Reviews by John Hammond

Impress your friends this summer, (or the person on the next sun lounger), with some…

SUMMER CLASSICS!!!

PastedGraphic-2

Easy to read, easy to fall asleep over, easy to wake up to and start all over again having realised you dozed through the previous three chapters…

John Buchan, The Thirty-Nine Steps

The grandaddy of all thrillers; nail-biting action from beginning to end in this exciting manhunt, action man Richard Hannay racing from the gaslit streets of London to the wild Scottish moors under threat of his life as he tries to uncover the mysterious secret that his enemies will kill for.

G.K.Chesterton, Father Brown and The Man Who Was Thursday

Father Brown is Sherlock Holmes with a sense of humour – try these short stories out and you’ll be hooked. Then try the ‘The Man Who Was Thursday’, another early detective thriller and one of the best – will the hero beat the sinister cult who (probably, being a sinister cult) want to take over the world?

G. & W.Grossmith, Diary of a Nobody

Gentle English comedy – the diary of a little man, Mr.Pooter, who feels neglected and somehow pointless, thinks about doing something about it, and fails in his inimitable, shy and half-hearted way.

H.Rider (don’t call me Merle) Haggard, King Solomon’s Mines

Featuring Allan Quartermain, the original Indiana Jones, big game hunter and ladies’ man; high adventure in the wilds of 19th Century Africa. Another book featuring Allan Quartermain, entitled – in a brief loss of imagination – ‘Allan Quartermain’, is also available! And, once you’re a Quartermain fan…

H.Rider (yes, again)Haggard, She

One of the best-selling books of all time, and the original ‘lost world’ novel, set in Africa among a tribe of warrior women led by – yes – ‘SHE’ (aka ‘she-who-must-be-obeyed’). How will alpha-male Quartermain fare when up against this attractively sinister, sinisterly attractive new foe?

Samuel Butler, Erewhon

A utopia? A dystopia? Where is the mysterious land of ‘Erewhon’? And why?

Horace Walpole, The Castle of Otranto

Half-ruined castles? Check. Mysterious black-clad strangers? Check. Ghostly sounds at dead of night? Check. Innocent young ladies in desperate need of rescue? Check. This is the original horror fantasy, that put the ‘G’ in Gothic. Without this there would be no Frankenstein’s monster and no Dracula either.

all available now in the NIS library!!!

Used Book Sale in the Library

Adware

We’re seeing adware on people computers. We are now monitoring the school network for this type of activity and following up with those who are infected. If you see Adware behaviour on your computer please have it fixed. Stop by our Apple store or  email help@nanjing-school.com

Where does it come from?

Adware often comes packaged in installers for other software. Most often, this is because something was downloaded illegally from a torrent or piracy site. Sometimes it is because it has been added to a legit piece of software by an unscrupulous download site. (Even well-known download sites, such as Download.com and Softonic, have resorted to this kind of unethical behavior, and should never be used.) Other times it is because a developer has opted to use an adware-riddled installer, provided with incentives from the adware creator, to distribute their software. It could even be installed through deceit, by pretending to be something that it is not in order to trick the user into installing it. (This last type is usually the only type that is detected as malware by anti-virus software.)

What are the symptoms?

The most typical symptom of such adware is the display of advertisements on your Mac where none should exist. Adware also will often change your browser’s home page and search engine settings, and may even cause redirects from legit sites to sites constructed for the financial benefit of the adware developer. It can also cause secondary problems, such as web pages displaying incorrectly (due to insertion of foreign HTML code) or browser crashes.

Fix it by Scanning with AdwareMedic

Download and run AdwareMedic

AdwareMedic will scan your system and help you remove any known adware automatically. Please read the AdwareMedic documentation, which can also be found by clicking the Get Help button in the app. Be sure to pay attention to any prompts, as you may need to decide whether or not to delete certain preference files, or may need to restart the computer and then do another scan. Read the prompts carefully, and be sure you understand and follow all instructions.

If you are unable to download AdwareMedic because the Download button redirects you to other sites (such as the MacKeeper site) or because the AdwareMedic site pops open for a fraction of a second before being replaced with a page that says your browser can’t find the server, you are infected with the Downlite adware. It is actively trying to prevent you from downloading AdwareMedic. See us in the Apple store or email help@nanjing-school.com

The Duck Is In Flight

This year’s fantastic edition of the Purple Duck arts and literary magazine was launched into flight last night at a magical party featuring PYP song and Bollywood dance, art installations and literary readings at the open mic, followed by live music from several acts, all taking place on several stages. It was a music and arts festival quite unlike anything NIS has seen before.

A big thank you to everyone who contributed to this year’s magazine – we couldn’t have done it without your talents. And a very big thank you to those who performed last night – graciously, poetically, and movingly – and those who helped put the evening together, in small ways and large. Special thank yous to Ms.Yuen for her usual professional photographic work, and to Mr.Kay for all his time, his wealth of experience, and for the use of his venerable desktop computer.

And finally, a huge flap of the Purple Duck’s wings goes out in appreciation to the Purple Duck team for their inspired party-organising skills and for all their hard work spent bringing you the best arts and literary magazine in China! This year’s team was: Michelle Lei, Maristella Witt, Emma Sonevang, Brydie Dwyer, Jannik Schwachta, Minna Sonevang, Alicia Liu and Sophia Liu.

Don’t forget, the Purple Duck magazine will be on sale at various outlets over the next two weeks. Make sure you get one before they sell out! A mere 60RMB for one, 100RMB for two!

Student Council President/Vice President Elections

Today is the big day to elect the SC leaders for the 2015-16 school year. The candidates are:

Team A: Catherine and Luke

Team B: Kostya and Cameron

After assembly in your homerooms, you will cast your vote for who you would like to see leading the student council next year. Every vote counts!

FYI: Expiring Theme

The default Edublogs Theme we use is set to expire in about 30 days. I’ve gone ahead and changed the Theme to “Able”. This has changed the look of the website to a white background with a light grey menu bar.
