Amy Yang will come to attend the MYP Assembly at 2:30PM Fri Aug 14. She is going to receive the Certificate of over 10 Years Service together with other 15 colleagues.
We will also take this opportunity to send her our greetings for her birthday on Sat Aug 15. I’ll put a birthday card in the Staff Lounge at lunch time today for all of us as her friends at NIS Community to sign.
MYP English B Phases
Phase 3
Phase 3 students understand and respond to simple spoken and written texts. They interact and share information in a limited range of familiar situations, using basic language appropriate to a limited range of contexts.
Phase 4
Phase 4 students understand and respond to a limited variety of spoken and written texts. They engage in conversation and write structured text to express their ideas, opinions and experiences in a range of familiar and some unfamiliar situations.
Phase 6
Phase 6 understand and respond to a variety of spoken and written texts. They engage in conversation and write structured texts in a range of contexts. They can communicate substantial information containing relevant and developed ideas.
At NIS we have a couple of students in some MYP grades who have not yet reached the standard of Phase 3, but who are assessed against the criteria for phase 3 and as such are on Veracross as phase 3 students. A list of these students will be distributed to the relevant teachers by the end of the week.
Ann Dong’s 2nd baby girl was born on 1-July-2015. Now she has two lovely daughters.
These will be held in the Strategy Room (C115), starting at the beginning of Lunch, and run for about 30 minutes.

This week we will image student computers. When we image the computers, we will erase your hard drive and install new software. This year, we are upgrading to Yosemite and installing Microsoft Office 2016. We will pick up your computers from your Advisory groups and take them to the IT Bat Cave. We are planning to complete the process by 3 pm. Please pick up your computer after school from the Apple Store.
Please remember your hard drive will be ERASED. IT department will not back up the hard drive. Please make sure to back up the hard drive before the pick up date.

Hello Teachers,
Please find the attached seating plan for the PAC. Basically, each house gets 8 rows, 5 for 6-9 sections and 3 for 10-12 sections. It will be up to individual House advisors to sort out exactly where your lovelies sit within your section. There will not be enough rows for each advisory, so some creative thinking will be needed!
On Friday, it would be very helpful to stand beside your rows and direct your students to their seats. Feel free to coordinate ahead of time in today’s or Thursday’s advisory. This will be a good dress rehearsal as attendance will already be taken. I will publish the chart for students tomorrow. Thanks for your flexibility and extra thanks to Sam B.

A reminder that we will have Extended Advisory today until the end of Block One (9:15am), then a regular school day. On Friday, we will have another Extended Advisory in the morning (until 8:40am) and our Welcome Back assembly at 2:30pm during Block Five.

The CISSA rugby tournaments are being played in Shanghai in 5 and a half weeks so we need to get training. If you are interested and in grade 5 to 8 please come to the first training of the year tomorrow, Thursday the 13th of August. For those of you new to the school touch rugby is a mixed girls and boys sport and is a great way for the girls to teach the boys a thing or 2 about sport. Don’t forget to bring a hat, sunscreen and a drink bottle. See you on the pitch at 3.10pm. Coaches Marsh, Kay and O’Brien.
Each week’s school bell is a 15 – 20 second song clip that is chosen by a different homeroom and advisory group. Classes that choose to submit a bell will hear their clip sometime in the upcoming 36 school weeks. If there aren’t enough bells submitted, then individual / teacher bells are also accepted. If your class would like to submit a bell, please drop it onto the server at the following address:

Here’s some rules / advice:
1. All lyrics must be appropriate.
2.The file should be high quality (not taken from a crackly YouTube video, e.g.)

4. The song must be less than 20 seconds long (15 seconds is preferred).

The Language Acquisition post will look at different language related topics.
Who they are! It is essential to know which of the non-native students in your class are ELL/English B students and what level they are at. This will give you some idea how much English they know and will help you to have realistic expectations of what they will be able to understand and do in your lessons.
Making a list of the ELL/English B students (with their respective level) is a good way to identify these students. It is also useful to note the name of the ELL/English B teacher . This can facilitate the liaison that is a very important aspect of our joint effort to support ELL/English B students as effectively as possible.
At the right hand side of the Teacher Portal page of Veracross there is a link “My Students- ELL and English B”
In grades 1 to 5 students who are beginner English language learners are placed in “ELL”
In the MYP programme students are in either EngBP3,4 or 6 (details of each level will follow)
In the DP programme, weaker English language learners are in EngB HL, more competent ones Eng A Lang/Lit.

It is great to see how many teachers are creating uncluttered space for learning in their classrooms. Please do not put furniture out in the hallway that you want removed without filling in a yellow form and leaving a message (in Chinese is best) that it is to be removed. As teachers creatively use the PYP corridors as extended learning space the Yadong cleaners need help in discerning what stays and what goes. For empty boxes, please do this at the end of the school day so the corridors are not blocked during the day for our students and colleagues. Let’s continue to be thoughtful. Students back at last!
Passport Update for Banking – for those who updated your passport, please update your passport at the bank counter. Please take the old passport, the new passport, the expert certificate and your bank card to the BOJ for it.
Chip Card & SMS function – Our bank, the BOJ, recommends strongly, for those who have not done these, to replace the old BOJ card （magnetic card) to a chip card and SET THE NOTICE FUNCTION OF SMS at the bank counter ASAP.
FA PIAO&Receipts – For reimbursement objective, please always ask for FA PIAO within China. Please glue the FA PIAOs&official receipts at the back of the request form evenly. Neither staple nor clip please.
