Tech Tip 8:   More Handy Keyboard Shortcuts on your MAC

Todays Tech Tip is a list of some more helpful keyboard shortcuts to help save time.  Most of these shortcuts rely on you pressing a combination of keys together, and most of the time you will be starting by pressing and holding the Command Key (or Cmd) ⌘ followed by another key, then letting both of them go.

Zooming in and out on your browser

(to make something easier for students to see on the projector)

  • Command + sign: Zooms in
  • Command – sign: Zooms out

Copying / Moving a file

(eg Copying or Moving from Downloads to your OneDrive)

  • Command key while dragging the file: Move the dragged item to the other volume, instead of copying it.
  • Option key while dragging the file: Copy the dragged item. Note that your cursor changes while you drag the item.

Screenshots, Screen Snips and screen recording

(This is a good one if you want your students to be recording or capturing something from their screen)

  • Shift Command 3: Whole Screen screen-shot
  • Shift Command 4: Brings up a cursor allowing you to select a section of the screen to take a screen snip
  • Shift Command 5: Opens a tool bar allowing you to take a screen shot, screen snip or make a screen recording.

OK, they were the ones I use every day.  Now for a few less common but equally useful ones.

  • Command-Tab: Bring up a tab that you can use to select from the most commonly used programs.  This is most helpful if you have your Apps maximized and so can’t see your Dock.
  • Command Option ESC: If you see the spinning rainbow of death, this opens the Force Quit window so that you can shut down an Application that has stopped working.
