NIS Self-Study and Planned Actions Here!

Please find our 2022-2023 self study report linked here along with a summary of the planned actions from that report. The self-study and evidence submitted by our committees last June will greatly inform the lines of inquiry our 13 peer evaluators will take during the upcoming October accreditation visit (October 7-13). Please take a look and be reminded of our collective, reflective efforts and marvel at the efforts already underway on behalf of our students. More detail can always be found in the Accreditation folder on the digital hub. Please see Kasson with any questions or feedback. Thanks to all!

Diversity at NIS

Diversity at NIS

At NIS, we believe the following about diversity:

Definition: Every community member is seen and heard.

Action: Acknowledging, appreciating, and valuing the differences that make us unique shall build a robust, connected community.

Top Tips

Among the tips featured in lists of “how to” embrace and teach diversity in classrooms are the following:

1. Re-evaluate your teaching pedagogy and curriculum

Which voices are speaking in your classroom?

That is, whose stories do you tell? Especially in the humanities and social sciences, teaching materials can often be limited to Western, white, male and middle-class narratives. Also, are you addressing all the learner needs in your classroom?

2. Get to know your students

All the students in your school are unique individuals, so use that fact to build a diverse and inclusive school culture.

3. Be willing to address inequality

Part of supporting diversity in the classroom is creating a safe space for students and educators to talk about how issues of discrimination affect them on a personal, classroom- and school-wide level.

IB Posters

If you are looking to add some IB touches to your classroom, you may be interested in these trilingual Learner Profile Posters. I inherited them years ago and unfortunately can’t credit the creator because I never knew who made them.

MYP teachers may be interested in these MYP-Command-Term-Posters.pdf created by Gary Goodwin that use simple visuals to help explain the terms used by each subject. In order to increase the size, you can screenshot sections and print on A3 paper.
