You can choose Mondays or Wednesdays, 3.05 – 4.15.

Please sign up now on SchoolsBuddy and come to a quick meeting on Friday lunch 2, August 25 in D228.

Instructor-Guided UDL Equity Course

Novak Education is offering an instructor-guided virtual course starting in October focused on the connection between UDL and social justice, culturally responsive practices (CRP) , impact over intentions, disproportionality, and integrative comprehensive systems. Discussions will focus on identifying and eliminating systemic barriers that result in systems that don’t work for all students, especially those who are culturally and linguistically diverse. Beyond understanding the what and why of UDL for Equity, you’ll walk away with actionable strategies and tactics to address inequities in our ever evolving learning environments. A natural next step from our work with Shelley and Jacinta!

This 45-hour course costs $475 USD and is eligible for Professional Learning Allowance funding. Please see Jacqui, Sara, or Kasson for details.

Belonging at NIS

Belonging through names

We can foster a sense of belonging by learning and saying student names correctly. Some inspiration for the significance of names followed by NIS created guides and tip sheet to help with pronunciation.

Inclusion at NIS

Inclusion at NIS

At NIS, we believe the following about inclusion:

Definition: Everyone feels welcomed, valued, and accepted.

Action: Seeking out and integrating diverse perspectives and experiences is an active and ongoing process of intentional engagement that connects and strengthens community.

But what does this mean for our practice in the classroom and in our community? Here are some beginning thoughts from the team at Novak Education.

Tip: Read the infographic substituting ‘difference’  (think: neurodiversity, language proficiency, learner variability, sexuality, ethnic/cultural background) for disability.

We will have a meeting Monday AUG 21) , Lunch 1, in D228 with Mr Toole to discuss how to create this year’s Student Council.

Note About Music Facilities

Please be advised that the Large Group Rehearsal space in the Music suite is off limits to all students during the week of August 21 to 25, except during approved class times and the Mon, Wed and Thurs after-school activities.  We appreciate the patience as we inventory and prepare everything for this year.
Morning break and lunch duty teachers are instructed to ask students who come in during those times to find other spaces for the time being.  Please be respectful of their directions.  Much thanks from the Music Department.

Bells of NIS

One proud tradition of our school is that students choose the bells. This is typically done by Primary homerooms, Secondary Advisories, or other NIS student groups with songs in their collective hearts and/or positive messages to share.

Bell must be appropriate for all ages and under 10 seconds in length. They are usually songs that are downloaded, then edited in Quicktime or other music programs, then saved in one of the usual audio file types.

Any homeroom, Advisory, or student group that would like to submit a bell should upload their selections to the prestigious Official NIS Weekly Bell Selection Committee using this folder. Putting the homeroom/Advisory/group in the file name is also encouraged.

Reminder about Robotics Competition

Are you in G8-12 and have an interest and passion in Robotics?

Shanghai American School Puxi is holding an exciting Vex 16hr Robotics Build Event on Saturday 16th of September and Mr Brady has been able to reserve a number of places for NIS students to participate. Students get to attend two workshops throughout the course of the day, and will get hands on, practical experience with building, programming and competing (for fun).

This event is being organised and led by the Shanghai American School  and places have been strictly limited. The event will run from 0600 – 2200 (yes, you did read that correctly, 6a.m. start!!!).  So participating students would travel to Shanghai on Friday afternoon and return Sunday morning.

No equipment or experience is needed, everything will be provided.  Students get to partner up with a friend, and will then be put in mixed teams from there.

There are a limited number of positions available, so just a reminder, if you are interested in participating, please come and see Mr Brady in the Design Centre asap so you don’t miss out.
