Grade 12 ESS “goes to” South Africa this Friday
Thanks to Skype in the Classroom, our grade 12 ESS students will meet Princess, one of the penguins rescued by the South African Foundation for the Conservancy of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB). We will also chat with a marine biologist involved in the conservation efforts in Cape Town and the impact of plastic pollution in the ocean as part of our study of pollution management. If you’d like to stop by and listen in, feel free to stop by. Our Skype call begins 2:15pm (room D204). If you’d like more info on virtual field trips like this for any grade level, feel free to contact me (luizmello@nanjing-school.com, room D204).

Language Acquisition
Make sure that students understand why they are reading the text and what they will have to do afterwards. ELL/English B students often believe they need to understand every word of a text, whereas in many cases they can fulfil the task requirements by scanning or skimming through the passage. Having a clear reading purpose helps them to focus more efficiently on the information they need to extract.
missing large glass water container
Hi everybody, I have misplaced my large, glass water container. If anyone finds it resting somewhere can you please bring it to my class room D206.
Thank you.
Student Surveys – trial and feedback
Good morning,
Based on your offers during INSET, I have contacted teachers who had indicated interest in trialling the Student Surveys. If I have missed you, please send me a message – I’d be happy to set you up!
Thank you,
Arden
Calling all readers!
Join us for the first half of lunch in the library for Random Acts of Reading and Kids Read prep!
Find new books, talk about what you’re reading, and help us prepare for the ACAMIS Kids Read competition in January.
Readers of any language and level encouraged to join us today at 12:55 in the back on the couches. No prior experience necessary.
Language Acquisition
Making language comprehensible
Try to use the shorter, more common word in favour of its less frequent equivalent. For example, buy is better than purchase, begin is better than commence, look at the diagram on page 3 is easier than focus your attention on the diagram on the adjacent page, etc. (The exception to this rule is when the aim is to introduce or develop vocabulary that is an integral part of the knowledge of the subject.)
4R Shredder
Does anyone know what has happened to the 4R shredder which was in the MUN room D248? Please let me know if you have it as the Eco Team needs to use it. Thanks.

Lost and …
There has been a small amount of money found on the floor in front of my office. If a student (probably PYP) tells you s/he lost some money yesterday, have them come and see me.
