MYP Lunch Revisited

Hello MYP Rockstars,

A few reminders from our assembly last Friday…

-We love you and want to keep you safe and organized. So…

-Please go to your locker right after Block 4 and again five minutes before the start of Block 5 (on the bell).

Why? It’s just a good habit to get into. Your back needs a rest and your know your things will be safe.

-MYP students shouldn’t be upstairs during lunch unless a teacher has asked you to meet (PPP, Stuco, etc).

Why? There is no one on-duty upstairs to make sure you are safe and sound. Plus, your dedicated teachers need a break!

-Take advantage of the great outdoors, gym, upstairs in the cafeteria, or library foyer during 1st 1/2 of lunch!

Why? These spaces were designed just for you!

-Backpacks are NOT allowed in the cafeteria during lunch. They go in your locker.

Why? We don’t have enough ice and bandages for all the injuries caused by tripping over 100’s of backpacks!

-We are looking for ideas for a better way to use our lockers. Let your Stuco reps know if you have one!

Why? Your ideas are often better than ours and Stuco exists for a reason!

Thanks and have a great (short) week!

MYP Tech Challenge Friday September 4 Block 5

The MYP inter house Tech Challenge is rapidly approaching. It will be block 5 on Friday Sept 4, this is a Day 1.

The following teachers will miss the chance to be involved because they are teaching grades 11/12 at that time: Ruth, Rob Battye, Danny, Juan, Luiz, Darren and myself.

I am making up the teacher supervision groups. If you have some reason why you cannot take part in the tech challenge please let Russel know, ex. you are a specialist teacher and are involved with PYP at that time or you will be away from school for some reason.

Please check the draft schedule below and let me know if there are any problems.

Thank you.

Language Acquisition

BICS and CALP

Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills (BICS) is the ability to function in everyday situations and Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP) is the ability to use academic language. Research shows that children immersed in English can develop BICS in 2 years whereas CALP takes between 5 and 7 years. Non-native speakers who have attained a high degree of fluency and accuracy in everyday spoken English do not, in most cases, have the corresponding academic language proficiency.

How many times have you been asked by a parent for advice on how to help their child at home learn English?

Conceptual knowledge in the home language helps to make the input in the second language comprehensible. Asking students to research a topic, or talk about concepts they have learnt at school in their home language can help students gain a better understanding. By understanding the concept in the home language the student only needs to “cope” with the language. In the course of learning a concept/skill in one language s/he can transfer this to the second language.

PYP Student Council officers

Ladies and gentlemen, here are the 2015-2016 PYP student council officers:

  • President: Angele

  • Vice-President: Fiona

  • Secretaries: Casey and Mathilda

  • Publicity officers: Yongsuh and Suyeon

PYP Student Council will be using the display board outside Ms. Gijzen’s office so that PYP student voices are heard.

Language Acquisition

Treat ELL/English B students as full members of the class. Refer to them often and make it clear to them (and to the class) that you expect them to work and learn just like everyone else. Then ask for more and more participation and work as these students become able to accomplish it.

Back it up!

This is your friendly weekly reminder to back up your computer.

Did you know that, according to a survey done by Apple , “only four percent [of users] back up [their computer] regularly. In a nutshell, this means that if you could snap your fingers and make one Mac user’s main hard drive disappear, there’s a 96 percent chance that you just destroyed files that are completely unrecoverable.”

Don’t know how? Read this or come to the game room during the first half of lunch for help from Ms. Johnson

Don’t have a hard drive? Ms. Cassie in the Apple Store can order one for you

Why: to enjoy our Student Council camp planned by Kostya and Cameron

Language Acquisition

Give students as much opportunity as possible to practice using new words. The only way to make sure students understand a new word is to have them produce it themselves either orally or in writing.
