Year: 2015

Language Acquisition

The words that ELL/English B students have most difficulty with are the academic, non-subject-specific words  that occur across all disciplines; words like duration, indicate, similarity, furthermore, rate, etc. These words cause problems for two reasons:

  • subject teachers generally assume that their students know these words and seldom teach them explicitly;
  • most of the words are abstract, which makes them much more difficult to learn.

It will be useful to make explicit the meanings of some of the semi-technical vocabulary that reoccur in your subject. Without a strong academic vocabulary  students will struggle to achieve success in your class.

Thanks for coming out!

The Social Committee would like to thank everyone who was able to make it Friday!
We had an Automatic…Systematic…Hydromatically Greased Lightning filled evening!

Try to create opportunities for ELL/English B students to be successful. Praise their achievements.

Four Square Only

We have had a number of incidents where people have been hit and hurt by a ball that has been kicked or thrown by students who are playing on the concrete area in front of the school. Please move your soccer/football games to the grass or the soccer pitch at break time and before and after school.

Thanks for keeping our school entrance safe from flying footballs!

Eco Team Success

Very excited and proud to announce that Cosima and Sophie were awarded the European Chamber Corporate and Social Responsibility Award in the category of Sustainable Growth and Environment Protection, for their presentation about ‘Earth Hour’ at NIS. The trophy is on display in the Centre foyer-please let it be a reminder that we all have the power to improve the state of the planet. We just need the will and empathy. Look our for exciting news of what you can do to show the world’s governments you care about global warming.
