MYP/DP Production Auditions!

Calling all performers…

This year’s MYP/DP school production will be Peter Pan. This is set to be a spectacular production set on the mystical island of ‘Neverland’, where magic and mischief will captivate all involved!

Auditions will be on Monday 22nd August and Wednesday 23rd August during lunch break in the Theatre, with possible callbacks Thursday 24th and Friday 25th August.

If you are interested in being a part of this extraordinary production, please see Mr Brown or Ms Philip in the Black Box for an audition extract and further details.

You do not need to be a Drama student or to have any prior performance experience to be part of this production. Just a desire to perform and commit to being in something amazing!

To Homeroom and Advisory teachers

To all Homeroom and Advisory teachers,
Dear New Comers, this is Lucy, Secretary to Arden. Welcome on board ?
Dear more Seasoned Ones, this is Lucy, the old Secretary to Laurie and now to the new Director, Arden.  Welcome back ?
Have you had a good summer holiday and are you feeling refreshed and ready for a new school year?
Thursday Aug 11 is the first day for all students and please distribute the two materials in your pigeon holes:
  1. School calendars to each and every student:  If you need more, pls feel free to ask me for more copies; if not, pls return the surplus to my pigeon hole.
  2. Strategy books “The Little Book of NIS ” to the youngest students: this is to the youngest child in the family for them to hand over to their parents and avoid duplication. Please check with your students if they have siblings, and where they come in the pecking order. If in doubt hand one out !
Besides, I will put students’ birthday cards of the next day in your pigeon holes after lunch every day, so you can give the cards to the students in Homeroom/Advisory periods in the mornings.
Lucy

If you had received one already, please return to my pigeon hole.

And, pls note there is a “3-Way Invitational Conferences” on April 27 2017.

Teaching mindfulness

A parting gift from your departing Counsellor…

I have created a website and an online course for teachers who are looking to incorporate Mindfulness into their classroom practice.

For NIS staff, I’m offering a 50% discount on the course fee. A PD opportunity for early next year, perhaps?

Here’s the website link: http://mindfullygrowing.com/

And here’s the course link: http://mindfullygrowing.com/course/teaching-mindfulness-to-children/

In this course you will learn about some of the research supporting mindfulness for children.

This course is for teachers, administrators, counsellors, parents, social workers, support staff – anyone, in short, who is working with children in an educational setting, and sees the potential that mindfulness has in helping these youngsters make  better sense of the world.

This course assumes that you are not new to mindfulness. If you are, you can still benefit, but will have some extra ‘work ‘to do – which means that this course will take you longer than someone with a regular mindfulness practice.

The course will cover your own mindfulness practice, introduce you to some of the latest research supporting the practice, take you through the art of writing your own mindfulness scripts, and ultimately guide you in running mindfulness sessions with children.

It is expected that, allowing for time to practice what you learn, the course will take about a month to complete (or 6-8 hours per week). Of course, some participants will get through the material more quickly, whilst others might take longer.

The course has no tests, no requirements to progress and is entirely self-paced. This means that you can technically fly through by clicking ahead, but get little of real value. The assumption here is that you want to get the most from the course, and that you will pace yourself, allow days, even weeks, between lessons and take the time to practice what you are learning.

Thank you for taking this time and effort to bring mindfulness to the children you interact with. Ultimately this skill-set will serve them more than anything else you can teach them.

Receipts provided for PD costs.

Email me on scott@mindfullygrowing.com for your 50% off voucher.

Travel tips from Yinyan help desk

Heightened Airport Security Measures both at Shanghai Pudong and Hongqiao Airports, following impact of recent explosion incident at PVG.

You may need to schedule earlier arrival at least 3.5 hours prior to the flight for international departure and 2.5 hours for domestic departure, since new security measures are expected to increase waiting times with extra security guards stationed at terminal entrances to manually inspect.

Here is website links to read more about security check provisions by Shanghai Airport Authority in line with Civil Aviation Administration of China(english version):
