We have access to “The Day,” which is an affordable alternative to Newsela (which is absolutely out of our price range). The Day offers current news in 5 different English reading levels. You can switch between primary and secondary (levels 1 & 2 do not include sensitive issues such as murder or death), can copy article links to send out to specific students or the whole class via SeeSaw or ManageBac, and includes news in Arabic, Mandarin, German, French, and Spanish. You can easily switch reading levels when viewing an article. Currently access is available on-campus only…I am working on off-campus access. This link is available for students and teachers to use.
For today’s Tech Tip I want to draw your attention to the amazing suite of online digital subscriptions that the school has available for your use courtesy of Angela in the Library. You can check these out by going to the schools Destiny Library page found here.
NIS Library Homepage (Destiny)
I would strongly suggest bookmarking this website, otherwise there is also a link to this site found on the MyNIS page of the school website. Here you will find a curated list of terrific online resources, including links to resources that the school has purchased subscriptions to. There are also grouped links to online resources including image databases, MYP/DP content, eResources for PYP and tools relating to APA Referencing amongst many others.
If you do want to use any of the subscriptions, you will need the appropriate username and password. A link to the file that has all of these can be found below.
NIS Online Subscriptions 2022-23
The information in that document is for NIS teachers and students only, so please be mindful of that.
And don’t forget that this and all previous and future Tech tips can be found here in the NISTech Sharepoint page.
That’s it for today’s Tech Tip. See you again next Tuesday.
