MAP assessments: message for G6-10 students

Students in Grades 6-10:

Over the next couple of weeks, you will take the Spring MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) assessments in Reading and Maths.

You will see the schedule below that indicates the time of the assessments, where they will take place, and the supervising teacher.

These online assessments may take up to 90 minutes, so you will have extended lessons on these days.

You may finish the assessment early, so bring a book to read quietly.

Any questions — please see your Maths and/or English teacher or me.

Faculty Transition Workshop Thursday April 12

Hello NIS teachers,

On Thursday,  April 12 at 3:15 the counselors would like to offer a workshop for those faculty and their partners
who will be leaving NIS and continuing on to new locations around the globe.  We will meet in the Cafeteria Mezzanine, floor 2.
Some talking points:

  • Transition Stages
  • Ideas and advice from those in recent transition
  • Family needs
  • We are all transient, tips and tricks from each other

IT-Help

Your projector not working in the classroom? Getting the spinning rainbow wheel? Having trouble connecting to wifi? Please make sure to email               it-help@nanjing-school.com for any digital technology problem you may have and we will respond to it within 24 hours. Please try to be as specific as possible in the email. Keep in mind that what might seem like a “small” problem can sometimes be a symptom of something much larger and more complicated. And remember, when in doubt, restart!

Thank you,

Joe and the IT Team

5 Gigabytes

Recently, there have been a few people with visits to our IT offices wondering what the message on the left means (ours, of course, is not from Vietnam – this is an example).

If you receive this message while you are connected to our NIS wifi or ethernet (i.e. Student, MYPDP Student, Teacher, etc), it means that you have reached your 5GB daily limit of school bandwidth.

This is just a friendly reminder that we all share the fruits of our “open” internet here at school, and know that it is a powerful tool for learning, sharing and collaborating. Please make sure to turn off your torrents or online gaming arenas while on campus during the school day and consider our digital philosophy tenets of RESPECT and CONNECT.

For a little perspective, many people have a data plan of 5GB per month for their mobile phone. All else equal, this quota is enough for an average of 15 hours of streaming HD video, 7-8 hours of video calling, or maybe an hour of downloading the latest season of Sherlock from your favorite torrent app.

So if you should find yourself facing this message at any point in the near or distant future, maybe ask yourself the following questions about your internet use:

  • Have I thought about how my actions might affect others?
  • Am I using technology in a way that promotes positive, inclusive attitudes?

Thank you for reading,

Your Friendly NIS IT Department

Bells

Many thanks for all the bells that were submitted this week!  We now have the happy problem of more-bells-than-weeks for the rest of the school year. We still have a few scheduled weeks (e.g. DP exams, Brown, Bratton, Joyce & Norbraten), but will still try to get as many bells in as possible. We will also move some to August of 1819, before the next year’s schedule takes place.

Thanks for the influx of bells – we really appreciate it!

Reminder – Update your Microsoft Office

A reminder to all Students and Staff to regularly click “yes” to running the Microsoft updates. Not only will you get access to new and improved tools in your Office 365 suite of software, but your software will run better too. For more information, check out how to do it here.

No Open Gym today

There will be no Girls’ Open Gym today, but we’ll be back after the break! See you then!
