UCD in Dublin, has their own 50 meter indoor pool. Earl Mc Carthy is an ex-Olympian, he is the Head Coach, he works a very successful program with them thus breaking a lot of National records and qualifications for World University Champs & Olympics qt’s.

The swim team is a student-based team and is split into two training groups, namely a First Team and a Second/Varsity Team.

The focus of the First Team is on national championship and international competitions. Minimum standard for consideration for First Team membership is approx. FINA 550 points in a long course meters. First Team training is an 11 month program

The focus of the Second Team is more recreational and competes at an intervarsity level. There is no minimum standard to train with the Second Team. Second Team train is for university semester training only.

There is a 10x lane 50m pool and the team uses 3 lanes of this for the training sessions. The First Team training 8 water sessions a week plus 3-4 gym sessions

They offer two different levels of scholarship.

Elite Level: An elite level scholarship program called ‘Ad-Astra’. Minimum consideration times for Ad-Astra is about 740 FINA points in an official Olympic event in long course meters.

Ad Astra includes a stipend of approx €3500, free full physio and nutrition support, personal S & C coach, access to specialized gym for scholarship athletes only and academic flexibility around exams and assignments, also full academic study support if necessary. Subsided training fees for swim team membership. In addition, performance based financial support, when available, for international away competitions. Applications need to be in by Janruary31st.

The second scholarship program is called ‘Sports Scholar’. Minimum consideration times for Sports Scholar is about 690 FINA points in an official Olympic event in long course meters.

Sports scholarship includes: discounted physio support, personalized S & C plan with weekly one-to-one S & C meeting, access to specialized gym for scholarship athletes only and academic flexibility around exams and assignments, also full academic study support if necessary. Subsided training fees for swim team membership. Performance based financial support when available for international away competitions. Applications need to be in by Janruary31st.

The application is an online form which will ask for details such as what level of sport the athlete competes at, sporting achievements and goals, suitability for the scholarship, how the scholarship will help the athlete and supporting references.

It is a joint swimming and waterpolo club and train in both disciplines. There is a €5 registration fee. The current training times are as follows:

 

Monday: Swimming, 7-8pm.

Tuesday: Waterpolo, 8-10pm.

Wednesday: Swimming 7-8pm, Waterpolo 8-9pm. Thursday: Swimming 9-10pm. Sunday: Waterpolo 1:30-3pm.

“In terms of competitions our main events of the year are Swimming Intervarsities, and Waterpolo Intervarsities. These are weekends where all the Irish Universities come together to compete against one another. We also travel to some of these other Universities throughout the year to attend competitions. Finally, we compete in regular league matches for water polo.

All our sessions are coached by qualified instructors.

We are open to all students, you do not have to be a high performance athlete. ”
