Year: 2016

CNY Skit

Each year, the teachers and students at NIS put together a Chinese New Years skit to perform during the CNY assembly. This is made up of both Chinese and non-Chinese speakers, students and teachers alike. If you’d like to perform in this skit, then please contact Miss Keus by Wednesday, December 14th.  The skit will be 10 minutes long, so we only need less than 10 people. At the moment, we are looking for the following roles:

  • some teachers and staff who were born in the Year of the Rooster.
  • a Chinese-speaking student who can help write the script with Miss Keus.
  • anyone else who is confident performing in either English and/or Chinese.

I will, of course, be chasing up our normal crew of performers, as we all want to see Mr. Tyoschin dancing, Kostya fighting, etc.

Remember… You’re Invited!

Don’t miss the opportunity to meet up with all of your favourite NIS friends and colleagues, to receive possibly the best Christmas gift of the season and to share and enjoy some delicious light snacks.

When: Friday 9th December from 4:00 – 6:00ish

Where: Staff Lounge

Reporting Chat Today at Lunch for Middle and Upper School Teachers

Hello All (and especially new MS/US teachers),

A reminder that a voluntary meeting about semester reporting at NIS will take place today during first lunch in the MYP LGR. I’ve condensed the message into a “top ten” list attached. The reporting guide and trios shared in the previous weekly e-mails should also help!

Please come along today to ask any questions and get the scoop on best-fit, reporting quandaries, and the meaning of life AKA: Veracross.

See you then if you’d like!

Ps. If you can make it today, but would like more support, please let Juan or I know. Thanks!

The social committee are looking for a stainless steel urn for the mulled wine on Friday. There were 2 at the NIC Christmas Concert but we cannot find where they got them. Please email lindybuckley@Nanjing-school.com if you can help! Thank you!

Website Login Popup

screen-shot-2016-12-06-at-8-38-56-amRecently some people may have been getting a popup on their browser (like the one at the left) when going to a non-secure website (i.e. http vs https). Simply input your email username (without the @ symbol or email address) and password and it should go away. The simple reason is that there is a time limit on the authenticated connection to these non-secure websites – essentially it is a security mechanism. If the popup doesn’t go away after inputting username and password, try turning off then on your wifi, and repeating the username and password input. This is to reestablish a secure connection. If you’d like to learn more you can read more below.

In order to communicate securely between remote servers (servers are essentially computers that “serve” data and information to “client” computers via the internet), there are things called digital certificates that provide verification of the security and authenticity of the information they are sharing. Often times this will be designated by a https:// at the beginning of the website, and designate that it is a secure and legitimate website. At the same time, in order to secure our own network and secure us when viewing non-secure websites, all our traffic on Teacher and the student networks travels through our RADIUS (Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service) server that communicates with a central server elsewhere to grant authorized access to these sites. This RADIUS server has a 48-hour authentication period, so that if you visit a non-secure website like http://www.espn.com on a Friday afternoon at school, then try to visit it again on Monday, you will see the pop-up. However, if you are back on campus sometime within that 48-hour period and navigate to it (via the same network you were on that Friday, nevermind the device) you won’t be asked for that login.

If you’ve gotten this far, and it makes some sense, you’ve reached Level 2 Network agent status. And if you were prompted to look up some of these terms, promote yourself to level 3! As always, feel free to ask any questions you have.
